A month ago, I decided to measure how much the searchfield on my website was used, as a fun statistic. Today, a month later, I have the percentage of visitors who used the searchfield on bredsaal.dk:

0.2%

That’s when I decided to remove it completely! After all, if the searchfield just sits there, without being used, it’s a wast of precious screenspace!

Have you ever measured how many of your visitors are using the searchfield on YOUR website? Do you care?

We find that people use the search bar ALOT, now this could be a bad thing because it means that our navigation menu is not very effective, or it could just be that people like the ease of searching using text input. I guess what really matters is that people are finding the right results when they use the search input.

You have got me thinking now. I use WordPress for most my sites and leave a search box in my template. I’ve never monitored how often it is used. I bet it just sits there wasting space like you suggest! I’ll come back and let you know.

  3. Yes please do that. :-)
