If you’re using the new Ubuntu 10.04, you may have noticed that Sun’s Oracle’s java is not there anymore, it has been replaced by openjdk. This also means that there is no sun-java6-plugin to use with your favorite browser in Ubuntu 10.04. Instead, you must use the openjdk browser plugin, which can be installed like this:
sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre icedtea6-plugin
Remember to restart your browser for the plugin to be loaded. :-)

Thank you Jannich! I’ve been pounding my head against the wall using the instructions on this from java.com. This really helped, thanks again!

  4. Kurt says:

Wow! Why didn’t I think of this, icedtea6-plugin. No wonder Microsoft owns the market.

    Anyway, thanks a ton Jannich.

  5. Andrew says:

Kurt: surely it’s not too much to expect for someone coming from Microsoft to Linux that they should be able to guess a completely random package name that is a very clever play on the whole Java / coffee theme.

I don’t there’s any reason to expect users to feel frustrated if “aptitude search java jvm jdk” doesn’t find the relevant package.

    Feeling better now…

  6. Niki Harris says:

Wow… thank you so much. As Bob has said, the instructions from java are horrible.

  7. Thomas says:

    Hi Jannich,
Jannich i require Sun Java rather than the openJDK packages.
My question is this, is it possible to run SUN Java alongside OpenJDK, or better still remove the open packages all together?
Not certain if this is totally in tune with what you are talking about.

  8. Stefan says:

Thanks Jannich for the instructions. It really is a shame the instructions from java are so horrible you need to go search through other blogs to find the solution. Anyway, I’m glad your post was able to solve it for me.

FYI, if in Synaptic Package Manager you go to Settings->Repositories, and you enable the “Canonical Partners” repository in the “Other Software” tab, you can install sun-java6-*.
