Inspired by the NoDoFollow plugin for Mozilla Firefox, I just developed my first extension for google chrome, which is a simple nofollow highlighter. It will search through a website, striking through every hyperlink with rel=’nofollow’.

Here is a screenshot of what it looks like when Nodofollow for chrome has analyzed links with various rel attributes:

The nofollow extension in action!

  1. John McMannon says:

Man, you are the best! Seriously, I use this all the time with Firefox and was just itching for someone to make it with chrome. Definitely one of the most useful tools on the web for doing SEO. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

  2. Rajj says:

How am i suppose to use this ?

  3. Hi Rajj.

Well it’s pretty easy. You should use google chrome or chromium of course. Then you click on the download link above and the extension should be installed. Then it should strike through every link that has got the nofollow attribute on every website you visit.

Do you guys think I should write a blogpost describing how to use it to find dofollow blogs? ;-)

  4. Lisa S. says:

    Thanks for the tool

  5. Tried out the plugin, and will say, that I like it, except one “small” thing (which is the reason I wont really use it that much):

I have to go to Extensions and enable/disable the plugin. Personally, I only need to see the line over the NoFollow links, when I’m working with my SEO or doing research etc; I don’t want to see it, when I’m just browsing normally. So maybe you could add an Icon, where you can easily enable/disable the plugin function, from the toolbar?

Otherwise nice too. Saludos from Peru
    /Christian

  6. Hi Christian.

That’s actually a pretty good idea. I’ll try to implement this when I find the time. :-)

  7. Thanks I will be using it. I was looking for something similar after using nodofollow for firefox as I have shifted to chrome now as it is fast, atleast for me

    Samantha

  8. Hi Samantha.

    Great! :-D

  9. RSF says:

Wow, thanks for the awesome tool, but I highly agree that you should add a button to enable/disable… If you did that I would bet that some of us would be inclined to donate a little something…

  10. Yea, this is a great plugin. I have totally switched of from Firefox due to the plugin-container thing that is making my computer slow as hell.

This plugin is great. I do hope for a right-click situation like the Firefox version.

  11. Dinesh says:

Thank you sooo much. Using it now. Love it. Usually I don’t use Firefox because Chrome is faster than Firefox. But I had to because of it’s great plugins. Now I don’t want to use Firefox as Chrome has now Extensions. That’s a great improvement.

  12. I’ll try to make some enable/disable feature in the new future, as many of you guys seems to need it. :-)

  13. Tom says:

Very cool. I have been using firefox so I could use the plugin available for that, I do prefer Google chrome though so I’m over the moon about this! Thanks.

  14. Sam says:

wow thanks so much. I really like using chrome but have been hindered by the lack of a do follow finder! thanks for developing this. much appreciated

  15. Agile Seo says:

Thank you for working on this plugin. I have just installed it but from the comments it seems it works well. If I have any issues then I will definitely share them with you.

  16. Gracie says:

I’m glad I found this, it works great on Chrome. :D

  17. Martin says:

I am going to give it a try now :-) . Currently migrating/testing out chrome and I’ve found it easier than I thought it to be. The last thing missing is a good nofollow shower ;-) .

  18. Martin: I hope you like it. :-)

  19. AJ says:

thanks for working on this plugin,, it’s work great but need to right click like Firefox plugin to see do-follow link..thanks for sharing :)

  20. Nice plugin. I assume it strikes through ALL nofollow links, not just some?

  21. Sebastian says:

    Thank you for the tool!

  22. Wilesneles says:

    Very interesting indeed …
The idea of adding a button would definitely improve it ..

Like most users, I’m a big Chrome fan but firefox still have some nice plugins … it’s nice to see chrome catching up!

    keep up the good work
    cheers!

  23. Nick says:

This is awesome! I never thought about doing something like this, but it makes sense. I wish the search engines would just stop caring about “nofollow” links and bring everything back to the good ‘ole days of the Internet.

  24. Marvin says:

Fantastic now I don’t need to keep switching to firefox.
You really should put up a donation page and make some money out of it :) Thanks!

  25. Phootbase says:

Your Google Chrome extension made my day. Thanks for sharing it for free. Just installed it and it works fine. Thank you!

  26. Victor says:

This is a great plugin! Too bad Chrome doesn’t have so big group of addons publishers like Firefox does. Your plugin works, but a suggestion, you need to make the right click thing to enable/disable the plugin. And maybe a small icon on the status bar.

  27. Ashwini says:

Wonderful tool. I have been using firefox so I could use the plugin available for that, I do prefer Google chrome though so I’m over the moon about this!

    Thanks for sharing with us.
    Ashwini

  28. Justin says:

I like it, but I do wish it would show you the DOFOLLOW links as well. When only pointing out nofollow links, I tend to worry it’s not working if it says nothing, know what I mean?

  29. Jonas says:

I could use the plugin available for that, I do prefer Google chrome though so I’m over the moon about this! Thanks.

  30. Hi Justin. I see your point, but how would you highlight the dofollow links? :-)

  31. John says:

This is great, infact I think it’s even better than the one I had for firefox that showed both dofollow and nofollow in different colours. You can have this plugin on all the time as it’ very subtle.

  32. Hi John. Actually that was what I was aiming for when I made the plugin. I figured different colors wouldn’t work as well, since different websites have different colorschemes. I don’t know of any websites that have their links striked through… :-)

  33. Just picked up this plugin and love it. Very subtle. I do kind of agree with Justin (comment 30), though I’m not sure what you could do about it. One suggestion would be to do colors but make them more faint than the FF one, or give the option to use strikethrough or colors. Colors are a bit easier to scan, even though I know you were going for subtle, which has other advantages. Would also really love the right-click functionality. All that being said, I really appreciate this add-on; thanks much!

  34. Ryan Dpozier says:

I was looking for this for quite some time! I could only find the Firefox version. Thanks for link.

Another cool Chrome SEO one is iPageRank. It shows your PageRank and other SEO stats.

  35. Roxane: The right click stuff will come. I have a lot of stuff to do, but I will look into it. :-)

  36. don says:

Thanks for the wonderful plugin. As a Chrome user its always difficult to find worthy plugins. Sure Firefox has many – but at the expense of slower speeds.

  37. Thank you very much. I was literally searching for this NoDoFollow plugin only. I have to use firefox in case if I want to check the Dofollow status of any link but now I can check it in Chrome itself. Nice plugin. Thanks!

  38. Lic says:

It is a very nice plugin. I was searching in Chrome Extension for this plugin but I was not able to find it. This plugin helps in identifying Do-Follow/ No-follow URLs. Thanks Jannich.

  39. Kenneth says:

Great tool, have been looking for an alternative to Chrome.
    Thanks for sharing :)

  40. Clyde says:

    Hi Jannich,
I am very glad to have found this plugin, because I like Chrome better than FF. I installed FF version 4, and oops!, it doesn’t work with a nodofollow plugin anymore. I thought I was stuck with FF, until I found your plugin.
    Thank you very much!

  41. Hi Clyde. I’m happy that you like it. :-)

  42. Dewi says:

    Hi Jannich,

Thanks for sharing. I really need this tool. Nodofollow is awesome tool for me.

  43. Sandra says:

Hi Jannich! I use some plugin like yours in Google Chrome, though in general I like Firefox most. Anyway, I’m not sure if I use your plugin or someone else’s, because I seem to have used it for quite a long period already, and I learnt about yours just now.

  44. Hi Sandra. I hope that you are using my version. :-P

  45. Hi Dewi.

No problem, dofollow links are important to all of us. ;-)

  46. Bossi says:

I could use the plugin available for that, I do prefer Google chrome though so I’m over the moon about this! Thanks.

  47. Thanks man! Appreciate it a lot. It would be a lot more awesome if you could have a “right-click -> disable” option for it (Hate seeing dashes through articles when I’m reading. Great job though 9/10!

  48. Yasser says:

nice work! … realy usefull for all SEO stuffs!! Thanks!!!

  49. Hi Jannich,

Thanks for developing the extension. Just changed the one I was using which added a faint dotted red box around no follow links on pages. But most times, I still had to fire up Mozilla to be really satisfied that links were no follow.

With your one, I don’t need to to do all that again.

    Thanks again.

    Bettina

  50. cadas18 says:

  54. MokuYun says:

Wow, thanks for this extension. Was recently doing a search for a a list of “dofollow” social bookmarking tools and some of the places were indeed nofollow. Thanks again, add a donate button!!

  55. ravit says:

wow, thanks Jannich! I’ve been searching for this and hanging around in forums to see what are people saying and happy to find you! I’ve installed it and it works great :)

  56. john says:

NoDoFollow plugin is one of ‘must have plugin’ for any Webmasters. Thanks for making this available for Google Chrome.Using this extension its now much easier to find dofollow links on specific websites.

  57. Debbie says:

I’ve been using a plugin like this with Firefox but Chrome has become my browser of choice. I would open Firefox just to use the “nodofollow” add-on. Thanks for developing this for Chrome. Now I can keep using Chrome without changing browsers just to use the nodofollow extension. Good Work.

  58. Claudia Daguer says:

    Jannich,
Thank you so much for your wonderful Google Chrome Extension. I was getting tired switching to Mozilla Firefox whenever I am browsing which websites have do-follow / no-follow links. With your plugin, I won’t have to do that anymore! Many thanks

  59. David H. says:

I was initially searching the internet for an answer to whether a site with a Donate button can or should have a nofollow tag in it. That is how I got this post. Very cool that a Google Chrome highlighter for these tags exists. I use the one for Firefox but now that I have started using chrome more often, I may refer back to this site. Thanks for the info and for the creation of the highlighter for Chrome!

  60. Yulis Samoa says:

I do not know why since a few weeks, I’ve fallen in love with google chrome browser. Thank you for helping me to install plugins nodofollow, through a browser google chrome. Because, this is a very important thing to find dofollow links on specific websites.

Once again, Thank You so much Jannich… :)

thanks alot for this great tool :D

  64. Joe says:

Thanks! Great plugin and neat way to get visitors to tweet :) Is it possible to get a highlight on dofollow links? I had one for Firefox that showed them in blue :)

  65. Marko says:

Was searching for Firefox’s Nodofollow plugin alternative for Chrome and found this. Excellent plugin, but is it possible to turn it on and off without going to options->extensions? Like in the Firefox’s plugin where you can right click on website and select whether you want to see no/dofollow links or not.

  66. Marilyn says:

Thanks Jannich for taking the time to write this extension. I’ve just recently started using Chrome more often because seoquake hasn’t been working in Firefox consistently. I needed this extension to complete my analysis before posting backlinks. Thanks again.

  67. Thank-you for creating a nodofollow plugin for Chrome. Much appreciated. Please do not take this the wrong way, but could you consider in highlighting the links in different colors similar to the nodofollow plugin in Firefox. Two reasons why. The first is that the links are far more visible, easier and faster to see. The second is that I always doubt if the plugin is working because I do not see a strike through if all links are dofollow. I am sure if you would highlight the links you would get a better response. I have seen this issue raised on a number of blogs and forums, and I am sure this is not the first time you heard this. Either way I don’t want to sound like a pain in the butt, but once again thank-you for your product, much appreciated.
    Pete.

  68. Mattias says:

Used the “pay with a tweet” so I could see a movie from a famous guy in e-sports. A brilliant function if you ask me!

  69. Maggie says:

Hi, I download your plug-in for nodofollow. But I don’t know where the options and how can I turn it on or is it automatically detect the nofollow and dofollow links?

    Thanks,
    Maggie

  70. Hi Maggie! There are no options for this plugin, and it is always on. :-)

  71. Milana says:

Great job! I have one suggetion to you! Chrome and Firefox now have good nodofollow plugins while opera doesn’t. At least those that i saw don’t work properly… So, do you get my hint?
P.S. Sorry for reposting it, forgot to write my real name )

  72. Hi Milana.

I have to say that I don’t use Opera, so I won’t be the one making a nodofollow plugin for that browser. :-)

  73. Cico says:

Thank you very much, I tried several addons for wordpress, for firefox, nothing seemd to work, this one works just fine and it onlly costs 1 tweet :)

  74. John says:

Thanks for the plugin – just started using Chrome (used Firefox for so long – but now Google SEO tools are not working on latest version of FF). So having little confusion with my old donofollow behavior! :p

  75. Jenny says:

Thanks for the tool! Great. I tweeted already.

  76. John says:
