STOP ACTA!

"The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is an agreement for the purpose of establishing international standards for intellectual property rights enforcement. The agreement aims to establish an international legal framework for targeting counterfeit goods, generic medicines and copyright infringement on the Internet, and would create a new governing body outside existing forums, such as the World Trade Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, or the United Nations." - From Wikipedia

Now, it is bad enough that ACTA will allow patents for crop seeds (just watch the movie Food, Inc and you will see what happens when a company patents a soy bean), but ACTA will make a lot of people criminals, more or less. If you get a tattoo of a copyrighted logo, take a picture of it, and puts it on Facebook, you might loose your internet connection, get a fine or even go to jail! Of course, if you do the same with music or a movie, you are pretty much guaranteed jailtime.

If you like to use the internet anonymously, for instance by accessing a website via the TOR network, you might be in trouble too. Some of the people behind ACTA wants to criminalize services like that.

Most people think that ACTA is relatively new, but it has been negotiated since 2006. The reason you haven't heard about it is, that the negotiations have been kept a secret, with only a few leaks over the years. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the goal of ACTA is to create a standard for sanctions, including prison sentences and disconnecting you from the internet. Also, information about you should pass from one countrys police force to another with no problems.

One document has been leaked to the public, entitled "Discussion Paper on a Possbile Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement". This paper says that Internet service providers should be encouraged to cooperate with copyright holders to remove content, violating copyright law. Some of those copyright holders would also like to have a "Three Strikes sanction", where a internet subscribers connection is closed after three violations.

Please sign this petition against ACTA.

Also, please share this page on facebook, Google plus, twitter or however you prefer, so more happy internet users can keep being happy while using the internet! Thank you!
