Now, having said that, it is true that the Faeroe island are a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Denmark and Greenland. What does that mean? Well it means that while the Faeroe island is technically part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it is almost self-governed, as has been since 1948. It’s also true that some people on the Faeroe island kill whales and they’ve been killing whales since 1584.
So, why are people on the internet (and probably elsewhere) demanding Denmark to stop killing dolphins? My guess is that they are ignorant! Seriously, I’ve read some blog posts (warning: very graphic images) and there’s some less than true statements in there.
Anyways, before I get to mad, let me recap: Denmark don’t kill whales (or dolphins), the Faeroese do.
The Faeroe island is NOT:
- Denmark
- located in Denmark
- governed by the Danish government (folketinget)
- filled with danish people, killing whales.
So next time you think something is terrible, do your research first!
Calling the Danish people dolphin-killers is not only incredibly stupid, it’s also very insensitive!

Good One!
Wow. Here I was, thinking the Danish people were monsters and you’ve gone and turned my perspective around. Clearly, Denmark isn’t the problem at all. Good on you.
@Tropical Joe: I’m happy I changed at least one mind with this blog post!
I wish a TSUNAMI strike that demonic island.
@ted: I think it’s important to remember that the Faeroe Island aren’t the only country killing whales.
Dolphins are wales, maybe you should do your research before hand as well … not just be “thinking about it”. . . Truly it is a small number of people that are doing killing in certain spots for ridicilous reasons,so it should not be said that the DENMARK or the JAPANESE people are doing that! and yes we should remember that the Faeroe Island is not the only place, Taiji, Japan is the largest slaughter of dolphins.
@Maya: I don’t think that dolphins ARE whales, but they are in the same family, along with porpoises. If you can point me to a source on the web that can clarify this, I will be delighted to correct my blog post.
Anyways, it doesn’t really matter to me. We don’t have any whales in Denmark either. We do have porpoises however.
Finally! A thinking human being in this world!
I was getting sick of all those comments in youtube and over the internet blaming all the danish people about the Whalehunt in Feroe Islands. It’s just unfair that all the danish people have to endure all the attacks and death threats by ignorant cybernauts and pseudo-enviromentalists because they think Denmark are the ones killing whales and dolphins.
Hi Alain.
Thank you very much, I’m happy you understand our situation and that you sympathize with us.
I put up this blogpost in the hope that people would read it and get their facts straight.
To all of you: If you would like people to learn more about “whaling in Denmark”, please feel free to give them a link to this blogpost.
Also, if you have any corrections, please write a comment including a link to your source of information, as I would like to keep this blogpost without errors.
Thanks for the blog.
Good reminder not to judge things without thinking. The circulated pictures are extremely graphic and it is not surprising that they evoke very strong emotions.
The landscape in the pictures does not look to me like Denmark at all and I am not aware of any dolphins living in Baltic Sea and proximity (unless they are equipped in gas masks and painted with anticorrosive agents to protect from pollution and toxins).
I’ve been to Denmark and I’ve met Danish people, I did not get the impression that after beeing so helpful and kind they enjoyed a bloodshed in their free time.
It is important to see things for what they are, people love to “drop” catchy slogans and generalise. Then you end up with “Dannish dolphins” as much as we already have “French vanilla” or “Polish concentation camps”.
Lots of people around the world know nothing about Denmark and will be tempted to attach the bloodstained tag.
Thanks for clarifying.
Be critical thinking instead subject to narrow emotion.
First, Faeroe island has been give the high degree of Autonomous , and yet it is historically being part of the Denmark.
It is strange that when people come from different race or nation will jump out to point that “such Awful thing have nothing to do with us” instead ask themselves with rational questions:” why they do this? and should such group of people and their behavior be judged according to the “universal objective views” which sometimes lead by Western Strong Nations” USA OR UK” which do not conduct “whale killing” but never felt ashame while driving big cars and with a high carbon dioxide emission living style.
@Lies in their shoes: Don’t you have a name?
Anyways, I don’t want to judge the Faeroese people at all and I don’t think that anybody else should, unless they know what they are talking about.
I think Dolphins should be protected. Regardless of who emits the most CO2 etc etc, acting now and STOPPING the slaughter of these animals whom we know so little about can be achieved easily with little inconvenience to the human race. Stop arguing just do it.
